🥗 CTO Craft Labs, Responsible Meetings, Growth Weeks, Conflict Resolution, Documentation: TMW #226 by CTO Craft
Hi everyone!
A huge announcement today - after months of honing and testing, we would love to invite all of you to attend the first of our series of CTO Craft Labs workshops. We've put together a string of half-day virtual workshops which will be conducted via Zoom and Miro, and the theme of the first Lab is Successful 1:1s and Giving Feedback. The group size will be limited to 12, and the first three Lab dates will be facilitated by Dan Smith, who many members will know from our Mentoring Circles and the Group Discussion events we run.
This first workshop is designed for early-stage leaders and CTOs who are just in the process of implementing 1:1 meetings and feedback loops in their teams - if you're more experienced, but interested in building some new skills with a group of others, you'll get some value here as well.
Participants will:
- Evaluate their existing approach to conducting 1:1 meetings and feedback sessions.
- Analyse the available approaches to making 1:1 conversations effective and giving impactful feedback.
- Start the process of creating their own approach to delivering high impact 1:1s.
Tickets are £350, but as TMW subscribers, you can use the discount code "indeedSEVERALwind" to attend for £250. The event links are just below
If you'd like to know anything more about the Labs before jumping in, drop me a reply or DM me on Slack!
Until next time

Culture & People
Make Failure A (Safe) Option
A mistake I made a few times earlier in my career was withholding opportunities from people on my team until I felt they were “ready”. Once, I had someone on my team, who I’ll call E—, who very much wanted to move into management. E— asked to take over our team’s budget planning.
A “Responsible Recipe” for the Fewest Possible Meetings
Welcome to Magical Meetings Stories, a series where I chat with professional facilitators, meeting practitioners, leaders, and CEOs across industries about their meeting culture.
Why we introduced “growth” weeks
At Promaton we finish every single quarter with a dedicated growth week. It has proven to be one of the best investments we ever made in our people, and therefore our company. Simply put, during our growth week:
Leadership & Self-management
25 Habits of Highly Effective Managers
Sharp folks from across the First Round community share the small habits that great managers do, including delivering feedback with care, opening up about failure, and sending praise up the chain.
3 Fundamental Tactics For Resolving Conflict As A Leader
During my time as a union steward, I spent over fifty percent of my time in conflict resolution meetings. Conflict is inevitable.
How Leaders Can Temper Their Tempers
No one likes working for someone that doesn’t treat them well. As leaders the job can often be stressful and you can end up juggling a lot of things. However, that doesn’t mean you can take out the frustration or angst, on those you work with.
Agile, Engineering & Product
The Lack of Agile Leadership Qualities
There are plenty of failure possibilities with Scrum. Given that Scrum is a framework with a reasonable yet short “manual,” this effect should not surprise anyone.
Planning & estimating large-scale software projects
This weekend I was talking with a friend about how I'd planned and estimated a huge software project in one of my previous jobs.
Documentation, another case of rapidly diminishing returns
No body writes documentation in startups. Writing documents is a luxury only established companies can afford. One might ask: are companies successful because they write documents or do they write documents because they are successful? But I’d be hard pushed to find anyone to argue the latter.
That’s it!
